What makes a good cat story

Cat books work best when they resist the urge to make the cat behave like a dog. The comedy is in the indifference, and the warmth is in the rare moments it slips.

  • The territory. Which rooms are theirs, which chair is contested, where the sun lands at four o'clock.
  • The schedule. Cats keep time better than clocks. The 5am announcement is a legitimate plot point.
  • The offerings. Whatever they bring in, and how proud they are about it.
  • The one exception. The person they actually like. Usually the one who ignores them most.

Photographing a cat who won't cooperate

You need fewer photos than you think — four good ones is plenty.

  • Shoot at their eye level rather than from above.
  • Use daylight from a window; flash flattens fur and shifts colour.
  • Include one full-body shot so we get the shape and tail right.
  • A sleeping photo is genuinely useful for coat detail.
