Getting the likeness right

Likeness is the thing people care about most, and it comes down almost entirely to the photos you upload rather than the illustration style you pick.

  • One clear, straight-on face shot in daylight.
  • One full-body side profile for proportions and tail carriage.
  • One photo that shows coat colour honestly — no flash, no filter.
  • One photo of them mid-something: zoomies, digging, sulking.

Long-coated breeds, merle patterns, split faces and mismatched eyes all reproduce well. Very dark dogs are the hardest to render, so an outdoor photo in soft light helps enormously.

Reference study

What a dog book usually ends up being about

Once people start answering the questions, the same shapes tend to appear — and they make surprisingly good stories.

  • The route. Nearly every dog has one walk they treat as theirs, with landmarks only they care about.
  • The rule they refuse. The sofa. The stairs. The bin. There is always one.
  • The greeting. How they behave when the right person comes home is, for most families, the emotional centre of the book.
  • The collection. The ball, the sock, the specific stick that came home from Wales.

Popular with these breeds

There's no breed list to choose from — every illustration is worked from your photos — but these are the dogs we're asked for most.
